One Room Challenge | Coastal Chic Guest Room Reveal

CHEERS! Let's start with a celebratory toast (with your coffee or whatever you're drinking!), because why the heck not?! I pulled it of!! 6 weeks with the One Room Challenge was absolutely the motivation I needed to turn this space from the post-move-I-don't-know-where-to-put-this room to this. It's calm. It's light. It's airy. It mixes modern and traditional. It's coastal inspired. It's very "Elise." Our hearts so love the beach (we lived 2 miles from Wrightsville for 2 years!), and little pieces of that are reflected in this space.

 Special touch: all of the  seashells in this room were collected by yours truly while we lived in Wilmington, NC. 

  Would you believe that between Mark, Spyros, Hope and I, we brought these coral rocks home with us in our luggage from the Bahamas?! Weirdos! True.

Well, what do y'all think? I had so much fun creating this space. I wanted to keep it kind of minimal too so my guests can have lots of space without clutter. My in laws are staying here for 2 weeks come April. I was thinking about their stay lots during this process! One Room Challenge | Week 5

I'm baaaack! And I totally made up for lost time this week. The room is REALLY starting to come together...so much that I can only show you sneaky pics so we can save the big reveal for next week! Here's a preview of what we've got goin' on, y'all...WOO! 
Remember the bedside table choices I showed y'all in week 3? Well, I didn't choose any of them. Truth be told, I chose the nesting tables, and then they were no longer available. Womp. BUT! My mama spotted these. Much to my bargain-loving delight, they were also nearly half the price of the nesting tables anyhow. Winning! I was excited to welcome a bit of symmetry into the room with these two new pieces.

Then the day before yesterday I hit the total jackpot when I scored this painting for above the bed for $50 on a local Facebook group. I'm obsessed with it. I literally walk by this room and stop to stare at its beauty. I've even been keeping the door open just so I can enjoy it when I walk by. (The door was previously always closed because...eww. And clutter. I pretended the former junk room wasn't behind the closed door.) I can't wait to show y'all the full thing. Remember my inspiration pics? This is even better than any of those paintings!!!!

Last, but not least I made the clutch decision to relocate this tray from lying on our den coffee table 2 poufs pushed together to the guest room bed. Nancy has started to get into everything, so goodbye lovely staged tray in the den! It now has a happy home on the guest bed. The simple switch makes the room look so inviting.

One Room Challenge | Guest Room Week 3

Previously:Week 1Week 2Woo! My orders came in this week, and the simple changes are already making the room feel lighter and lovelier. I cannot tell you how much difference it makes changing out the bedding quilt from the former ecru matlasse bedding to my new $40 (! - for real) bright white bedding set.

Hello, love! Sure, it's no Pottery Barn pick-stitch quilt like we have in our bedroom, but that gets used everyday, so it's worth a splurge. This bedding set is perfect for our not-so-frequently used guest room. The fact that it came with 2 shams too was the icing on the cake. Plus, there is lots of goodness under that quilt -- not just sheets but and a thick, cozy blanket. So did this $40 fix win me over? Absolutely. White bedding for the win. Always. (P.S. If white beddings aren't your thing it does come in other colors as well! :))

My curtains came in too, but they still look like this. I'll have more details on them next week.



The last package that arrived? The industrial inspired curtain rods! From WAL MART, y'all. I bought them in black since it was the cheapest, then I spray painted them silver. I was really pleased at how shiny the paint was since the gold spray paint I used in Nancy's room was more dull. I used Valspar Metallic spray paint in silver.

Progress: less crap. (Yessssssss.) But now I need to bite the bullet and decide on some nightstands. My love for symmetry yearns for matching nightstands. It's true.

I love mixing modern and traditional, sooooo maybe you can guess my favorite (especially for the value!)?

I also moved this piece to the tall wall between the windows, and I'm loving it there. This will give me room for nightstand symmetry too. I'm thinking about using this as a vanity? The front of our house gets much better light than the back of our house, so this could be my little makeup station. In the guest bedroom, I know, but whatever.

Those white curtains are going to make this space look dreamy! I just know it! Can't wait to get them hung ASAP.

One Room Challenge | Guest Room Week 2

This week was filled more with ca-ching than ch-ch-changes, but I know it's worth it! And I did make a few bucks on some items I sold while decluttering, so there's that. :) I brought a lot of white into the room with my purchases which is always exciting in my heart. Here's what I scooped up. (Believe me, if you know my style, none of it broke the bank. That's how I roll.)

These industrial inspired rods had me at hello, and GUESS. WHERE. THEY'RE. FROM? Wal Mart. I got the black ones because they were the least expensive of the colors. I might spray paint them silver when they arrive.

On the note of starting to get rid of things and declutter the space (this room was preciously the "holding room" when we moved in and didn't know where to put things), has anyone read this book? I think I need it in my life. Scratch that, I'm dying to read it. I found a used copy that I'm picking up today. Woo!

One Room Challenge | Guest Bedroom Week 1

A day late and a dollar short, but it's on. The One Room Challenge: 6 weeks, hundreds of bloggers, and a room transformation for each participant to tackle. I've seen so many ladies and blogger friends agree to take on this challenge that I feel inspired to hop on board myself. Having moved into our home a few months ago, there are several rooms to choose from. We only have two rooms that are fairly "complete" thus far -- the nursery and the living room -- leaving me with lots of options. My pick? Honestly, I chose the guest room because it seems to be the least daunting task...it doesn't have other beautifully unique features that our house possesses such as pink tile, glitter mixed into paint on the walls, faux granite linoleum countertops, or a need that would cost way too much money right now (like 6 dining room chairs). Perhaps those other "special" selling points (seriously...the actual bits of glitter on my master bathroom walls...AHHHH) will be conquered in future One Room Challenges. Maybe. :)
Here is Week 1 of 6. What I really love about this intro week is that it's filled with the pictures people typically don't share: the messy, un-together parts of home. Social media is great. Let's be real, I totally love it (duh). But that picture perfect glimpse of life is only a small slice of the pie. So on that note, cheers to that the not so glamourous portion--the unorganized, chaotic, usual parts of life.
Welcome to our guest room...

 It doesn't seem too terribly bad at first glimpse (except that fixture--let's all agree that it's terrible), but honestly what bothers me most about it is it's just not "me." At all. Side note: for some reason, I intensely detest this little quilt/coverlet thing. The pattern is too formal looking and it just screams "great-great grandmother" to me. Bleh.

 Oh, hello piles of things that don't have a space yet in our home!

 Meh.

 I love this little guy. Obviously a well loved pillow. TLC needed ASAP.

The tupperware bin underneath = my shoes. And though I don't mind this antique secretary, I prefer more symmetry in my nightstands choices, so that needs to move.

 Random nesting tables. No good reason/purpose for them there.

 Okay, behind that "bigger" closet (peculiar closet and a half, I know) is a just-throw-it-in-there massive pile of hospital bills, mail, HUD statements, and various other paperwork we collected while we lived at my mama's for 5 months. It MUST be looked through and filed properly into the file cabinet in that corner nook. Also to do: make that craigslist file cabinet look less lame because that's really the only good spot for it in our home.

 On top of our file cabinet? Toiletries I haven't unpacked from England, clothes, tangled jewelry, koozies (random), and other various junk.

Mission: declutter, reorganize, add some modern elements, and find a design scheme that is "me." The dark furniture throws me off, but I want to try to pull it together and have something not light that's still my style. It's going to be an interesting task finding my taste in dark wood, but gosh darnit I am going to try!!! Here is my [p]inspiration.

1 | The white bed linens totally lighten up the dark wood, don't they?! Love. Also digging the art above the bed. You know the nightstand symmetry is my jam too. That casual throw over the bench makes the room look so cozy and inviting, doesn't it?

2 | Again: white bed, art above, symmetrical nightstands. Love, love, love. I guess these should be staples in my redesign?

3 | Same idea but flanked art and sunburst mirror. Oooooo. :) 

4 | I love the crisp lines in this room. It reminds me that I still want to bring a flair of modern to work alongside the traditional antique pieces I already have. ...I just realized that each of these pictures has a bench at the foot of the bed. Perhaps I should incorporate that too...?
