Pure Barre Pregnancy | 2nd Trimester

LTBing my last day of 2nd Trimester! | 27 weeks 6 days
(P.S. LTB is a "Pure Barre-ism" that stands for lift, tone, burn.)

Thoughts & Things I've Learned while LTBing through My 2nd Trimester of Pregnancy
(in a stream of consciousness kind of way, because that's just how my preggo brain works at the moment...)

- "Listen to your body!" is the key to all! Some days you can push harder than others, and some days you need to take it easy in certain positions or exercises. All bodies (and pregnancies!) are different. Remember that.

- I presumed I would feel things in my back lower back first because that's what I heard is most common in pregnancy. Nope. I felt strain/pressure/weirdness [while exercising] in my lower abdomen before anything else. For this reason, I stay up higher in lunge and chair positions, for instance.

- In terms of pregnancy brain, I literally forget either my ball or my tube more often than not. As in nearly every day. Sigh!

- Random, but Pure Barre has taught me...that I have a really long torso. I'm not necessarily super tall (I'm 5'7"...and a half!), but I'm one of the only ones (if not the only on most days) who can't fully put my head against the wall while under the barre during core work (you know, the part in class when your mat is all the way under the wood molding ;)). My torso just doesn't fit all the way under the barre with my back flat against the wall. I've concluded that long torsos are good for pregnancy because my bump has lots of room to spread itself out. But, let's be real, every other time in my life it just means I have short legs. Wompppp!

- Because of the long torso situation, I do believe I don't have as much pressure on my back at this point in pregnancy. I was able to (safely!) stay in all 90 seconds of plank all through trimester 2 except for a couple of days when I wanted to play it safe toward the end! But again...listen to YOUR body!

- Modifying sooner is better than pushing too hard, hurting yourself, and not being able to work out. Amen to that. My preggo friend (and PB Wilmington studio co-owner!), Kate, pointed this out to me and it resonated with me tenfold. I would so much rather play it safe and LTB through week 40 than mess myself up and have to take a break.

- With that said, the day after Kate told me that little nugget of wisdom, I started keeping my feet on the ground during warmup daily. Also, instead of doing those lower body leg lifts/reverse crunch things at the end of abs everyday (I forget what they're called...#pregbrainprobs), I just do an extra minute of seat work (think last 2.5 min of class kind of seat work). Maybe my back doesn't hurt or feel strain yet, but I'd rather protect it first than hurt it! This babe is growing bigger and bigger everyday, and I need to treat my body accordingly!
- What else do I modify...oh! Keeping both feet on the ground during core work under the bar instead of extending my opposite leg. And not doing minute of lower back extension laying on my stomach. I modify on all fours instead. I do about 20-30 small lower leg lifts on one side and then switch to the other side since this part of class lasts for one minute.

- I still embrace the shake. Because it's why we came, right? ;)
- But I make an extra effort to drink more water...especially after my heart gets especially pumping, like in between thigh sprints.

- When we stretch, the days of touching my forehead to my knees is long gone. Too much in the way. It's a funny (but happy) feeling. However, I still feel like I'm keeping up my flexibility by stretching everyday which is wonderful!

- The endorphin release is real. I seriously think I would go crazy without Pure Barre through this pregnancy. I am so thankful for Pure Barre Wilmington and the precious "Pure Barre family" I have at our studio!!! I love me some PB Wilmington! So much!

Weekending | Uneventful + Fulfilling

These sorts of weekends are my favorite. Nothing on the agenda except some good quality time as a family. We filled our days with productivity, being obsessed with our new Vitamix, and other surprisingly healthy things. It was refreshing and rejuvenating to say the least!

A Friday walk with Starbucks in hand. The gingerbread syrup is still out, so I'm continuing to indulge in its goodness. We hadn't seen the sun ALL week, so we wanted to take advantage of the blue sky ASAP.
We're becoming Vitamix obsessed over here. Mark watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead on Netflix earlier last week, and he has been on a smoothie kick ever since. I've happily joined in the fun.

Looks...eehhh. Tastes...so good. Recipe on Instagram!

 Saturday night tea
Trader Joe's Cinnamon + Vanilla Black Tea for moi (call me crazy, but it tastes like an oatmeal cookie) and chamomile for Marky

Another walk, smoothie in hand, taking advantage of the mid 60s temps in a shameless attempt to show my upper body the slightest bit of sunlight. 26 weeks 5 days and inching closer to the 3rd trimester!

In other extremely exciting news (womp), I purchased my "diaper bag." I took the genius lead of my girlfran and fellow preggo Maegen and chose regular bag plus a diaper bag insert. Woo! Winning. After an embarrassing amount of hours agonizing over too many faux leather totes, I finally went with this one in emerald/tan. I originally was sold on this one from Free People (LOVE me some fp), but that was before I found the other slightly less wide (and $10 cheaper) version. I can't wait for the purse and insert to arrive!

We closed out the weekend with our favorite, Downton Abby. Besides The Office (...and Wheel of Fortune + Jeopardy) it's one of the seemingly few tv shows that we tend enjoy together. Truth be told: I can't blame my hubby considering my other faves are anything Bachelor/Kardashian related. :)

New Year...Same Workout

Hi dolls! Nothing new to report here today, but I wanted you to know that you might see a sliver of a familiar face over on Mia's blog as a result of my love affair for all things Pure Barre. As if I didn't love PB enough pre-pregnancy, I can't tell you how thankful I am for it through pregnancy. (Though I think I might tell you that every week of my pregnancy updates. Oops. :)) That endorphin release is everything and definitely makes me feel a lot less hormonally crazy.

I've rounded up all things Cheers Y'all/Pure Barre related:
My thoughts at the very beginning of my PB journey

Thoughts and reflections after joining the 100 club

Everything you're wondering about LTBing through the first 13 weeks of being pregnant

Lots and lots of pictures and details. You'll get a complete review of Mia's first month of Pure Barre in Tulsa!

Come to think of it, I'll be doing my 2nd trimester PB update in the next couple of weeks. Yep, I have less than 2 weeks left in my 2nd trimester. Whaaat!? I'll be filling you in soon on modifications, new weird twinges, and all of that good stuff. :)

Please feel free to comment or email me with any potential PB related questions or concerns. I'd be more than happy to help in any way I can! And if I can't answer something, I know quite a few gals who can! January is a great time to try out a studio near you. I've loved seeing lots of new faces around PB Wilmington!

Cheers to a new year and a continued LTB obsession!

Honey Lime Sweet Potato + Black Bean Tacos

Y'all, this is going to be the newest staple in our house. Holy moly it's good. I won't waste any of your time chatting because y'all have got to makes these...now.

Honey-Lime Sweet Potato, Black Bean and Corn Tacos
Yield: About 5 - 6 servings

Ingredients
1 1/2 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled if desired and diced into 1/2-inch cubes
4 Tbsp olive oil, divided
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp ground coriander
1/8 - 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
Salt and freshly ground black pepper (I omitted the salt!)
1 small yellow onion, diced (1 cup) (Left this out because I didn't have an onion & didn't want to run to the store.)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (14.5) oz can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup frozen yellow corn, thawed and drained (I'm not a big corn girl, so I substituted with 1 can of chick peas!)
3 Tbsp honey
3 Tbsp fresh lime juice
2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro (Didn't have any of this on hand either but will make sure I do for next time! YUM!)
Corn or flour tortillas
Desired toppings (See below for the his/hers options I created for Mark and me!)

Directions
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil then place sweet potatoes on foil. Drizzle with 3 Tbsp olive oil and toss to evenly coat. Sprinkle evenly with cumin, paprika, coriander, cayenne pepper and season lightly with salt and pepper to taste then toss to evenly coat. Bake in preheated oven 15 - 20 minutes until tender, removing from oven and tossing once halfway through baking.
  • Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat remaining 1 Tbsp olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot add onion and saute until caramelized (golden brown on edges and tender), about 5 - 6 minutes, adding in garlic during last 30 seconds of sauteing. Reduce heat to medium-low, add in drained black beans, corn, honey and lime juice. Heat until warmed through. Toss in roasted sweet potatoes and cilantro. Serve over warm tortillas with desired toppings.

His
Honey-lime sweet potatoes + black beans on flour tortillas
Cheese
Avocado
Sour Cream

Hers
Honey-lime sweet potato and black beans on mixed greens
Avocado
Chipotle Salsa
1 tbsp chia seeds
Goddess Dressing (from Trader Joe's)

There ya have it! I loved the sweet potatoes so much that anytime I make sweet potatoes, I want to follow this procedure in seasoning them! Can't wait to turn back to this recipe for years to come.

Cheers to healthy food!

Best of Wilmington + Wrightsville | Foodie Faves

So obviously one of the best parts of moving to a new town is finding all of your new favorite spots. Food spots especially. Living in Charlotte my whole life, I know my Queen City staples for every which kind of food. Discovering our favorites here in Wilmington has been rather fun (and very tasty).

Here the list we've made as a result of our one year Wilmiversary: our current favorite restuarants in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach...

My Go-To Favorite
Fresh, local, healthy, super casual, and it's where I venture to after Pure Barre everyday to fill up my Epic water bottle with their infused water. I tend to always make my own salad with organic chicken and it's THE BEST. There menu has HUNDREDS of customizable options whether your craving pizza, something Asian inspired, or you just want a burger!

Favorite $$ Splurge
Looks like a hole in the wall, yet when you walk in there are bottles of line with cray-cray price tags. Best seafood ever. Better than any of the places on the Intercoastal!
The menu changes daily depending on what the restaurant has that's fresh and local. And it tastes incredible. No frozen-then-heated anything here! You can seriously taste the freshness.

Favorite Unhealthy Splurge
We loved this more right when we moved...but I think it has gotten new management and we (and a few other folks we know) have had a couple of disappointing customer service experiences. With that said, take out is the way to go. And the buffalo chips with ranch...worth every calorie. My favorite sandwich is "The Fav."

Best Lunch
Downtown. Awesome atmosphere. Crazy reasonable prices for lunch/brunch. So good. Oh...they also have some pretty fancy flavored cake doughnuts.

Best Breakfast
It's just your staple Southern, hole-in-the-wall, down home restaurant that's only open till 2 daily. You can get your collards, crab in your omelette, or M&Ms in your pancakes.

Best Mexican
Two words: salsa bar. And my salsa bar favorite? Wasabi avocado. For my salsa loving self, this one is a no-brainer. The menu is insane, the Flaming Amy is spicy goodness, the chips are perfection, and it reminds me of my beloved Carrburritos in my Chapel Hill days.
2nd Place: Las Olas
It's closer to us, has good specials, and Mexi-Q is a fun take on Mexican.

Best Sushi
...You had me at 1/2 priced sushi menu nightly form 5-7. :)

Little Gem
Basically a miniature Whole Foods with a cafe/salad bar/juice bar inside. Obsessed.

Best Eats Right Around the Corner
Good seafood. And they have a 1/2 priced wine night. But apparently what we need to do is try their Sunday brunch...it's supposed to be THE best.

Best Spot in WB
This place is perfect and my obsession. My favorite organic juice is Dawn Patrol (I have a thing for beets and the way they make drinks hot pinkish). The best thing on the menu in my opinion? The Green Room acai bowl (made with almond milk or coconut water). Your mouth thinks you're eating fro-yo topped with bananas, granola, and honey, but you're really eating frozen, organic acai berries with TONS of antioxidants! Win-win.

Best Bar [in terms of atmosphere AND cocktails!]
It's in an alley downtown with no fancy door or sign. The door is metal and there is one small wooden sign with an elephant painted on it. You wonder if you're even walking into the right place...I love it. It's a speakeasy and you certainly do feel like you're in one! Other perks...the exposed brick with 20's movies playing on it and a piano player.

The One We've Heard So Much About and Still Need to Try
I am told that this would win for best sandwich. Hands down. Marky and I need to go ASAP!

What did I miss? Where should Marky and I go next?!

100!

 Via

It has been a while since I raved about my favorite obsession/the best workout in the world [hands down]. If you haven't tried Pure Barre yet, let me convince you! :)

In celebration of completing my 100th class yesterday [woohoo!], I'm divulging 10 things I absolutely love about Pure Barre. [No, seriously. I never knew I could love a workout this much!!] These are 10 reasons why Pure Barre Wilmington has become part of my daily life -- my routine.

ONE | THE CORE FOCUS
Isn't everyone who works out told that it's important to have a strong core? I've heard that for years, but I never really did something that was so core-focused. Now that I'm a pure barre addict, I know that I am working on my core for 55 min straight each time I go to class.

TWO | THE TUCK
Speaking of focusing on your core, the beloved Pure Barre "tuck" works it so precisely. I've been known to tuck it up while driving when a commonly played PB song comes on. (If you're PB crazed like me, you know you have too!!!! Own it. :) I confess to tucking to this and this in the car.)

THREE | THE SHAKE
I also confess to this rule that I made for myself: I HAVE to "find the shake" during thigh sprints or I'm not working hard enough. And with that little rule,  I can get the shake every. single. class. Without fail. "Shaking means muscles changing!" Yeah, I agree with that. The shake signifies fat literally melting off of your body and your muscles getting stronger...or at least that's exactly how it feels when you're shaking like jello. ;)

FOUR |  MENTAL + PHYSICAL
I'm into "me time." Pure Barre is "me time." In those 55 minutes I'm generally not thinking about anything but whatever movement we're doing. "Hold your abs in, heels higher, seat lower, tuck harder, just an inch, don't come out of it, no, seriously don't come out of it!" Pure Barre is as much mental as it is physical. There's nothing dull or monotonous about it, and I love that.

FIVE | THE LOW-IMPACT
I have zero doubts or apprehensions about PB being part of my everyday life. It isn't hard on your joints at all. More than anything, I'm strengthening my body by using small, isometric movements that make my muscles stronger, longer, and leaner.

SIX | THE DEFINITION
...but really. Not to toot my own horn, but I've truthfully never had this much muscle tone/definition ever. Like, in my entire life. Fo' sho'! In my arms and abs especially. And that's 100% Pure Barre. No supplemental workouts necessary. If it weren't weird and awk, I'd totally take a pic of my arms flexed like a wannabe muscle[wo]man to show you. Don't worry. I'll spare you and save the "look at my arms!!!" flex for Mark and my mama.

SEVEN | THE FLEXIBILITY
I have never considered myself to be a flexible person. I figured that out in ballet at 5 years old when I'm pretty sure all the other limber 5-year-olds could do a split but this girl (heyyyooo!). With that said, [and with the knowledge that my dance career didn't last much beyond that year either] I am more flexible than ever before. Stretching everyday during class just rocks. Plain and simple. P.S. I haven't mastered the split yet, but would I be crazy to say that I'm slowly getting there?! Maybe I'll have it by class #250. Crazier things have happened.

EIGHT | THE COMMITMENT
Happy wife, happy life? Yes, I know people are quick to dismiss PB because "it's too expensive." Believe me, I'm Mrs. Frugal McFrugalson over here. But this is something I'm committed to. It makes me happy (Elle Woods knows what she's talking about with endorphins), healthy, and there are other things we can cut back on (cable tv, for instance!) to make Pure Barre a priority. And--lets be real--cost is totally a motivator to get your booty into class. Gotta get your money's worth, right?!

NINE | THE COMMUNITY
Can I just brag on the Pure Barre Wilmington team for a second? Because they're straight up amazing. All of the teachers are encouraging, motivating, friendly, and they make every effort to get to know their clients. It's a positive, happy environment for sure. The same goes for my fellow LTBers as well. We're in this together...especially when the third thigh sprint is that FREAKIN' wall sit like thing with the double tube. AHHHHH.

TEN | THE RESULTS
This is obviously the biggest reason people quickly fall in love with Pure Barre. Combine the former 9 things listed above together and what do you get? Results. It's like your body's way of saying "thank you."

If I don't have you convinced yet, come to a class with me! If you're not local, perhaps you'll vacay in WB or the Wilmy area someday soonish? :) I can bring a friend free any Friday. So holla atcha girl! Or shoot any questions my way!

And while you're at it, show my favorite ladies some love. Visit @purebarrewilmington on Insta and/or Facebook!

P.S. The two $25 winners of the eShakti giveaway are Emily S. and Katie K.! Congrats, lovelies!! I'll be emailing y'all shortly! [Winners were chosen and verified through Rafflecopter and random.org] xx

Cheers to 100 classes! (And hundreds more to come!)

Drink Your Greens

Morning, sunshines! Last month I wrote about 5 Healthy Habits that I [seriously] enjoy keeping. I got some fabulous feedback and requests for more...which totally blew my mind and was really cool at the same time. Yay!

With that said, I knew in an instant the next "healhty habit" of mine that I had to tell y'all about. Three words: Catie's Organic greens. I started drinking them daily in the summer of 2012 (a few months before our wedding!), and I've been hooked ever since.

Let me start by saying that this does not in any way replace my veggie intake. I don't use it as an excuse to skip out on eating greens. I try to keep a whole foods, plant based diet (read "way of life," not "way to lose weight") as much as possible, so using Catie's greens to replace eating green in general would be a no no.

I drink a glass of this every morning. It's like: Good morning, body. Here is a glass of SO MANY vitamins and minerals. You can absorb them easily and efficiently since your stomach is empty and they're in juice form. You're welcome. I'm telling you, y'all. This stuff is THE JAM.

 MORNING ROUTINE
1. Lemon water + cayenne pepper for detox [as described here]
2. Coffee with almond milk [addicted and unashamed]
3. Catie's Organic Gluten Free Greens [I've recently started the gluten free kind because...why not?]
Wait 20 minutes for absorption. Then eat breakfast. [Scroll down to #3. That's my go-to favorite!]

I mix a scoop of greens with filtered water, and I'm good to go. I like to keep it simple, quick, and efficient. Just a mix with a spoon...and done. [Nit picky note: I use a Tervis to make the greens + water drink. The curved bottom of the glass makes it easier to mix in the green powder without it getting stuck. Trust me, I've fixed enough glasses of these in 2 years to know! :)]

Some folks, namely my sister and my former roomie, Ensley, (also fellow greens drinkers!) think I'm cray-cray to drink the greens with water only. Genuinely, I think it tastes good. They don't. To each their own, right? I tend to love weird stuff (e.g. I will take seltzer water over juice any day of the week), so these greens with water are my jam. Not too sweet, but sweet enough to be pleasant! They definitely don't taste bad. But with all of that said, you can easily throw them into a smoothie too. Hope even wrote about her favorite smoothie recipe a few months ago and included our beloved greens, of course!

My friends over at Energy Essentials are so fabulous that they graciously sent me Catie's Whole Food Vitamin C Plus to try too!

Surprise, surprise...I loved it too. The bottle label is pink, which is obviously fabulous, and the drink looks enticing (or perhaps less intimidating than dark green juice?) as well . It definitely has a different taste than the greens -- and rightfully so, as it's jam packed with Vitamin C!

I appreciate that you can drink the Vitamin C anytime of day. I look forward to sipping on some glasses of this (with ice!) during the summer. It certainly tastes refreshing.  I will be sure to stock up on this during cold and flu season as well.

Since becoming obsessed with the Food Babe, I've gotten really into learning about the transparency (or lack thereof) of the food industry. Energy Essentials is a company that makes fabulous products and has strong values. Their mission statement makes me smile:

"It is our goal as a company and a family, to help provide natural answers for healthy living.  Because our cells make up our glands, organs, tissue, veins, arteries and even our bones, Catie has researched and formulated many products to help clean, strengthen, nourish, nurture, help heal and rejuvenate on a cellular level. We all know that not all products are what they say they are. Rest assured that we search very hard to provide NONTOXIC, CHEMICAL FREE, HORMONE FREE, PESTICIDE FREE PRODUCTS, AND AS ORGANIC AS WE CAN GET to help you live your best life now!"

Amen?! Love it!

Want to join me in adding this loveliness to your morning routine!? Please do! Catie has graciously given all Cheers Y'all readers 10% off your Energy Essentials order now through July 6th using the code CHEERSYALL.

Yes, the bottle is $40 (well, $36  with your coupon code!). Y'all know I'm as frugal as all get out. But here is the thing I believe: what I pay for in healthy, organic, non-GMO foods and drinks, I won't be paying for later in doctors visits and/or medical bills. These greens help give me a strong hold on my health -- they keep my body on the offense rather than defense. Money well spent. And a product that I clearly believe in as I've been drinking it for two years! (Oh, and the bottle will last you for a good, long while. :))

Please tell me if you're going to give the greens (or anything else!) a try because I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!

CHEERS...with a big glass of Catie's Greens!
